The platform is rolling out a new feature that allows them to lessen the volume of artificial intelligence-produced media appearing in their feeds. This move comes as the platform disclosed that it now features more than 1 bn AI-generated clips.
Trial and Implementation
The update is being tested over the next few weeks before a global rollout. This advancement coincides with a rise in AI-generated material, fueled by recent video-generation tools.
AI Proliferation Online
Recent reports that almost 10% of the most rapidly expanding channels on a popular video site exclusively feature clips produced artificially. A large amount of this material is classified as “AI slop”, a phrase for inferior, mass-produced content that is frequently absurd or surreal.
“We know from our community that numerous viewers like content created using AI tools, from computer-generated images to informative clips, and we intend to offer the community the ability to see more or less of that, based on their own preferences,” commented a platform representative.
Volume and Proportions
TikTok disclosed that there are now over a billion videos on its service labeled as artificially created. Overall, over 100 mn media items are added to the app daily, making AI-generated material a relatively small portion of its total content library.
User Control Features
Members will be capable of limit or boost the level of AI-generated videos they view by accessing the content preference setting in the platform and selecting “AI-generated content”. Additional categories that currently be adjusted under the tool include news, style, aesthetics, and choreography.
AI Disclosure Rules
Its guidelines oblige creators to tag convincing AI-generated content, and it prohibits malicious AI impersonations of well-known individuals or critical incidents. Any authentic-looking AI video that is not labeled can be deleted under its terms of service.
In addition, the platform will now add an AI-generated label to content produced via its own AI tools, or detected by an cross-platform project for identifying AI-generated material. This measure is designed to help prevent users from trying to circumvent the tagging system.
Responsible AI Funding
TikTok is also establishing a $2 million AI literacy fund for experts and organizations to develop informative material about using AI responsibly. This program will support non-profit groups specializing in educating coding and technology.
Moderation Strategy
TikTok has justified its moderation strategy, during debate over proposals to cut jobs for a large number of content moderators in Britain. TikTok is planning to cut hundreds of positions in its content moderation department in its British office, with trade unions and internet security professionals voicing alarm that people are being substituted by AI moderation.
A trust and safety lead explained that people-led review would continue to be important, but automated tools can protect employees by eliminating the most graphic content ahead of it gets reviewed by humans. TikTok announced a notable drop in shocking and graphic content reviewed by safety staff over the previous year due to intervention by its automated systems.
We believe it is crucial to combine staff and AI to keep the platform safe,” the executive stated. “We’ll have humans as integral to the approach, but we also think it’s very important to reduce exposure to harmful content as rapidly, which is the area in which a significant AI assistance is proving valuable operate efficiently.”
